|---|---|---|
| Winners | Top 3 (or top N) only | Anyone who reaches the threshold |
| Competition | High — only a few can win | Low — everyone has a chance |
| Best for | Grand prizes, headline incentives | Participation incentives, everyone-wins |
| Cost | Higher per prize (fewer winners) | Lower per prize (more winners) |
| Psychology | Drives top competitors | Keeps casual participants engaged |
The best gamification setups use both:
- Position rewards attract competitive attendees
- Milestone rewards keep everyone else engaged

Best Practices
Section titled “Best Practices”- Announce prizes prominently — display reward details on screens, in the app, and in welcome emails. Attendees need to know what they’re competing for.
- Start small, end big — milestone rewards should get progressively more valuable. T-shirt at 100 points, gift card at 250, VIP upgrade at 500.
- Use coupon codes — for digital rewards, coupon codes are easy to distribute and track. Include them in the milestone notification.
- Photograph the prize ceremony — when you announce position winners on stage, take photos. Share on social media with the event hashtag.
- Verify before announcing — with manual approval enabled, review the final leaderboard before declaring winners. Check that challenge completions are legitimate.
- Thank all participants — even attendees who didn’t win should feel valued. Consider a small thank-you for everyone who participated (e.g., “All gamification participants get 10% off next event”).
